In the early days of 3D printing, the RepRap project and open-source components like the RAMPS 1.4 Mainboard made 3D printing more accessible and inspired a global community of makers. These DIY-friendly solutions allowed individuals to explore and build with ease, and we at Boltz R&D experienced this firsthand when we successfully built a RAMPS board even when it wasn’t readily available in India.
As the industry grew, many businesses contributed to advancing 3D printing. However, we've noticed a trend where some designs, originally open-source, have become less accessible in terms of modifications and verifications. We believe that innovation thrives best when everyone has the opportunity to build upon shared ideas.
At Boltz R&D, our goal is to support and strengthen the open-source ethos within the 3D printing community by developing open-source hardware, firmware, and software solutions. We aim to keep innovation accessible, empowering everyone to contribute and collaborate.
Boltz R&D is a for-profit company dedicated to the principles of open-source development. We design and commercialize hardware and software without introducing any proprietary customizations. Our business model is rooted in transparency: we develop solutions that are open from the start and remain open throughout the life of our company. By doing so, we aim to foster innovation in a way that benefits both the industry and the wider community.
Each year, Boltz R&D will support four scholars—the next generation of makers, innovators, and contributors. These scholars will work on projects that offer open-source alternatives to existing solutions, with all designs released under the CC-BY-SA 4.0 license. This means the community will have full access to these designs to use, modify, and commercialize freely. Our goal is to create a sustainable cycle of innovation, ensuring that 3D printing remains open and collaborative for years to come.
